I started designing jewelry 12 years ago as a way to supplement my
income as a commercial fisherman here on Cape Cod. For several years,
I'd jig for cod and rod reel for blue fin tune on a 26' day boat out of
one of the local harbors. It was a wonderful way to make a living --
going out early in the morning, being on the water miles off shore all
day, watching the dolphins and whales and being surrounded by the beauty
of nature. Although the days were long (12 to 16 hours), it was amazing
the experiences you would have and the sunrises and sunsets you would
enjoy. Unfortunately, the fish started to disappear.
Hoping to
make a difference, I became involved with the Cape Cod Hook Fisherman's
Association, promoting awareness and educating people about the dangers
and destruction of the draggers in our waters.
Then I had the
idea to start selling my fish-themed jewelry designs at house parties.
It was a great way to tell people about the differences in how fish are
caught and the importance of requesting hook-caught fish because it was
the least invasive and most sustainable. Fortunately, the fish jewelry
started to sell and my jewelry lines expanded. Unfortunately, the fish
continues to disappear.
I'm no longer a commercial fisherman, but
I still sell my fish jewelry and love to share my stories about fishing
the waters of Cape Cod. I look forward to seeing you in the store.
